Service Description

This ceramic sculpture course invites students to dive into the expressive possibilities of clay through form-making, emphasizing the interplay of shape, surface, and silhouette. Working with hand-building techniques, you'll explore how texture can transform simple forms into compelling sculptural statements, while developing an eye for how your pieces interact with light and space through their distinctive profiles. This is a playful, experimental environment where you'll push beyond functional pottery to create purely artistic expressions, discovering how clay's unique properties can be manipulated to achieve everything from smooth, flowing curves to complex, tactile surfaces. This is a non-figurative sculpture class. Your are welcome to depict the human body, but this class will non be covering figurative representation. Beginning Handbuilding experience is required to participate in this class as this class will not cover the basics of handbuilding construction. The course is as follows: Week 1: Wall Sculptures with additive textures Week 2: Abstract Coil Forms Week 3: Closed Form Sculpting & Finishing/Continuing Coil Forms Week 4: Glaze Course meets once a week for 2.5 hour sessions. Course fee includes everything you need: clay, use of studio tools, a rainbow of cone 5 glazes, firing, plus open studio hours outside of class for more exploration in clay. Clay must be purchased for practice time. In each class session, you will build on what you learned and made the previous week, so we strongly advise you to make sure you’ll be able to attend all class sessions before signing up. It is especially important that you attend the first class, so if you think you might have to miss week 1, please consider enrolling in another session. We do not offer make up classes at this time. Long nails can make working with clay very frustrating. We recommend cutting them close before attending class. Also, clay is messy. Please dress accordingly and bring along an apron and a towel/rag for wiping your hands throughout the process. See you in class.
