NOV Bust Sculpture: Mondays

Service Description

Learn the fundamentals of sculpting the human head and shoulders in clay. This hands-on class covers essential techniques including facial proportions and anatomy, building three-dimensional form, surface texturing methods, and finishing with underglaze and glaze applications. Students will complete a finished bust while developing skills in observation, proportion, and ceramic surface treatments. Suitable for beginners and those looking to refine their sculptural techniques. We encourage student to come with photos and inspiration to create their form from. The course is as follows: Week 1: Building the structure of the head and planes of faces Week 2: Hollowing out; Attachments; Carving techniques; Comparative measuring for portraits; Constructive vs. Reductive sculpting for shaping facial features; Ears Week 3: Detailing facial features; Applying textures for hair, skin, jewelry, and clothing; Slip decoration; Underglazes Week 4: Glaze/Underglaze finishing techniques Course meets once a week for 2.5 hour sessions. Course fee includes everything you need: clay, use of studio tools, a rainbow of cone 5 glazes, firing, plus open studio hours outside of class for more exploration in clay. Clay must be purchased for practice time. In each class session, you will build on what you learned and made the previous week, so we strongly advise you to make sure you’ll be able to attend all class sessions before signing up. It is especially important that you attend the first class, so if you think you might have to miss week 1, please consider enrolling in another session. We do not offer make up classes at this time. This class is held at our new Handbuilding Studio at 1414 E Main St. Long nails can make working with clay very frustrating. We recommend cutting them close before attending class. Also, clay is messy. Please dress accordingly and bring along an apron and a towel/rag for wiping your hands throughout the process. See you in class.
