Do you know your way around clay? Are you comfortable getting your hands dirty, bouncing between tasks, solving little problems as they pop up, and occasionally finding yourself halfway inside a recycling bin? Then we might be looking for you. We’re hiring a Studio Assistant to help keep Clay Parlor running smoothly behind the scenes. This is a jack-of-all-trades position. There is a little customer service, a little retail, a little clay work, a little cleaning, a little kiln work, a little problem solving… and a lot of making sure the studio is actually functioning. WHAT YOU’LL DO Your day might include: ●Helping students and answering questions around the studio ●Selling finished pottery and assisting customers ●Wedging clay ●Mixing glazes ●Loading and unloading kilns ●Learning kiln firing and maintenance ●Organizing and managing student work ●Cleaning, resetting, and maintaining studio spaces ●Helping with studio projects and general upkeep ●Moving between whatever needs attention that day ●Occasionally doing things that are difficult to explain on a résumé Basically: if it needs doing, you may be doing it. WHAT WE NEED Ceramics experience is a must. You don’t need to know everything. In fact, we expect to teach you a lot. But you should understand the basics of working with clay and have enough studio experience to know the difference between cone 5 and cone 05 and that clay doesn’t go down the drain. We’re looking for someone who is: ●Proactive. You notice what needs to be done without waiting to be asked. ●Adaptable. You can start one project, get interrupted by another, and roll with it. ●A problem solver. Things go sideways in ceramics. You figure things out. ●Hardworking. This is a hands-on job. You will be on your feet, moving things, cleaning things, lifting things, and getting dirty. ●Independent. We give our employees a lot of ownership over their space and how they accomplish their work. ●Reliable. The studio needs people who show up and follow through. ●Comfortable with people. You’ll interact with students, customers, instructors, and the rest of our team. ●Curious. There is a lot to learn here, and we’d love someone who actually wants to learn it. ●An “I can do it” person. This is probably the biggest one. THIS IS NOT A “SIT AROUND AND MAKE POTS” JOB We feel like this deserves its own section. You will not be spending your shifts leisurely throwing beautiful little bowls. You may throw sometimes. You may help with pottery. But this position is primarily about keeping a working ceramics studio working. There will be clay on the floor. There will be dirty buckets. There will be heavy things. There will be kiln days. There will be cleaning. There will be weird little problems that need solving. And, yes, there may occasionally be a photo of your legs sticking out of a recycling bin.
